Alabama Legislature Act No
471, 1969
The Legislature of the State of
Alabama, during the Regular Session
1969, enacted Act No. 471 which was
further amended by the Code of
Alabama 1975, Title 41-17-3 through
41-17-8. This Act placed the
responsibility of establishing a
transportation pool with the
Department of Finance. The purpose
of the State Motor Pool is to
provide motor vehicle transportation
for state officers and employees who
do not have automobiles regularly
assigned to them.
The State Motor Pool was physically
located on Ripley Street between
Pelham and King Street from 1969
through 1985. The construction of
the Gordon Persons Building dictated
the Motor Pool move to a temporary
location until a new Motor Pool
could be built. The temporary home
was at the corner of Coliseum Blvd
and Traffic Operations Drive in
Montgomery, and was about 2 years in
the making. On December 1, 1987, the
Motor Pool moved to the present
location at 386 South Ripley Street.
Currently, we have approximately 200
cars and vans, and provide
transportation, fuel, maintenance
and other services to more than 220
different agencies. We operate on a
revolving fund and receive no monies
from the general fund.
